My career in SEN education has spanned more than 48 years and I am still as passionate as ever about helping young people. I have worked as Director of Outreach and Inclusion for Birmingham City Council for 13 years, and before that I was a deputy headteacher in a special needs school. I also have experience as a SENCo at an independent school, and in a number of primary and secondary school teaching positions. I am currently part of a team of teachers specialising in neurodivergence at a boys’ grammar school.During my career I have held a variety of educational roles including lecturer on the University of Warwick SEN Diploma course, and Trustee and Vice chair of the Dyspraxia Foundation. I also co-authored the Standards for Inclusion (Birmingham).I have spoken widely about SEN and inclusion for organisations such as NASEN, SEN Show, Education Show, Agadir Schools (Morocco), British Forces Germany, and International Schools Switzerland.I am the creator of Inclusive Story Maps, an original series of fun storytelling activities which are perfect for parents or teachers to use in the classroom or at home. I am also the creator of Balance It Out, a creative and fun diagnostic programme to help children, parents and educators. Movement is a child’s first language and it can be the first indicator of difficulties. Children who are not reaching movement milestones, or have had delays in other aspects of development throughout childhood and adolescence, can engage with learning in a way that suits them.
