The papers I teach include Academic Literacies and Tertiary English and Critical Thinking (TECT). The Academic Literacies paper is designed to teach students how to write in an academic genre. The class demographic includes students who have recently finished high school, those having taken a gap year and more mature students, embarking on tertiary qualifications for the first time. In their written work students learn to paraphrase and summarise scholarly journal articles, upholding the principles of formal academic writing, in-text citations (APA 6th format), referencing; in addition students collaborate to present research findings. The TECT programme teaches students to identify the characteristics of argument in written text, deductive and inductive paragraph formats, insight into different types of fallacies, reasoned argument structure. They are required to demonstrate these principles in written assignments and a final written examination essay.

I am a fully registered NZ secondary school teacher. I have taught in different types of State secondary schools for over 14 years. My teaching subjects include Social Studies, English, Business Studies (Enterprise), junior bookkeeping and horticulture. I have taught in different parts of the country at large urban secondary schools, a rural area school and a smaller community college. At the secondary school level I am familiar with the NZQA curriculum and have taught NCEA Unit and Achievement Standards in English and Social Science.
