Profile bio

About Barbara Young

Having fulfilled a wide range of roles including leading school improvement, recruitment, performance, and project management, I consider myself an experienced and determined School Leader. As a child of a single-parent immigrant family growing up in inner-city Hackney, I became aware of the importance of learning, and with some bumps along the way, I pursued a degree at SOAS,- and later became a qualified teacher through the Graduate Training Programme. My ECT Assessor described my teaching and the pupils’ learning as some of the finest that he had ever seen. I have taught all year groups at every Primary Stage from Nursery to Year 6, as well as at the Secondary level up to and including Year 10. As a class teacher, I was consistently rated as outstanding. As a School Leader, OfSTED Inspectors commended me as a determined visionary with very high expectations, able to accurately judge the quality of teaching and learning and provide guidance and support to teachers (Essendon 2013 & St Mary’s Stansted 2018). I have worked in a diverse range of schools, which has enabled me to successfully lead school teams and raise educational outcomes for pupils while maintaining nurturing and ambitious environments.

Listed skills include Teacher Training, Educational Leadership, Child Development, Early Childhood Education, and 13 others.

Head Teacher

Current
Ardeley St Lawrence Cofe Primary School

Ardeley, England, United Kingdom

Having successfully completed two challenging interim headships, I am delighted to begin my new substantive headship at Ardeley. Here, I have been given the task to grow this idyllic church school, so that its future becomes both certain and sustainable while retaining all that makes it so special.

Interim Head Teacher

Layston C Of E Primary School

Buntingford, England, United Kingdom

Interim Head Teacher until Easter 2022 of an outstanding church school in Hertfordshire until the return of the Substantive Head. It has been an uplifting experience taking the super team, through a process of improving the curriculum offer, preparing it for its impending OfSTED while also raising the staff morale. It has been great to see how all have rallied to the cause without exception. Layston has reminded me about the privilege, responsibilities, and challenges that the role of Head affords and how very much I thrive in that situation. Absolutely loving Headship (even if temporary)!

Assistant Head Teacher Primary To Key Stage 3

Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

Gretton is an independent school specialising in working with high functioning autistic children and young people from age 5 to 19 years. It is amazing seeing them grow in confidence and resilience as they are helped to become well-rounded, successful, and able to cope in today's demanding and at times unforgiving world. Always a passionate educator (whether as a teacher or headteacher) I have never been satisfied with anything less than the very best for my learners. At times at Gretton, it has been heart-breaking to see what can happen to complex vulnerable young people who have not had the same opportunities to thrive and learn as my past students have. Students that arrive at Gretton come with a myriad of anxieties and often loathing for school. Here, with a great deal of talented nurturing, they learn to develop a sense of self-worth and joy in education. As someone who has been a mainstream educator through and through, it has been uplifting to find myself working in a setting where autism and educational aspirations for SEND are part and parcel of what they do around here. There are certainly lessons to be learned from Gretton and schools like it for my mainstream colleagues. Perhaps one day I shall re-enter the mainstream world bringing the many insights I am gaining daily with me.

Sep 2020 - Jan 2022

Education Specialist

Folkestone

Recognised as an outstanding teacher, I have always been committed to ensuring access for all to quality first education and have supported many others, including in my leadership roles to achieve this too. I currently work as a freelance Education Specialist with excluded or disengaged students up to KS4. I aim to prepare students for a return to formal educational settings once they have developed a positive mindset, having had a recent good educational experience with me. I provide a bespoke highly tailored approach, adapting the national curriculum to student’s interests. I draw on my highly developed skill of being able to get the best out of students academically, socially, and emotionally whilst keeping abreast of the shifting landscape of education policy. Since working for Fresh Start, I have been very successful with a hard to reach ASD student causing the Local Authority responsible for him, to specifically request for the continued renewal of my freelance contract adapted to include distance online learning during the Covid-19 Lockdown, so as to secure the continuation of my work with him. Moving forward, I am now looking for a new role linked to education that builds on my wide-ranging skills.

Dec 2019 - Sep 2020

Head Teacher

St Mary’S Cofe (Foundation) Primary School

Essex

The school was inspected by Ofsted April 2018, within the first month of my appointment and described me as "determined and visionary [with] an accurate view of the strengths and weaknesses of the school. [Who] in a very short time, has set clear and high expectations to support all staff in raising standards across the school." By summer 2019 however, I reassessed my own professional development journey and decided to resign my headship, leaving the school in October 2019. Up until then, I had implemented a number of significant improvements that saw standards start to rise school-wide. I updated the school’s financial and administrative systems to make them more efficient and fit for purpose. Within a year I introduced a leadership structure to ensure wider shared leadership roles and responsibilities along with greater transparency and accountability. I established quality benchmarks and the introduction of gap identification systems for Reading, Writing, and Maths. I introduced a new structured reading scheme from reception to Year 6 that started to see standards rise by the time I moved on.

Apr 2018 - Nov 2019

Head Teacher

Abbey Meadows Community Primary School

Cb5

I pride myself in growing strong, successful teams. I quickly implemented some much-needed improvements to policies, teaching and learning and budget management. However, I soon discovered that the profound challenges facing this school called for a leadership approach that was against my professional and personal ethos. I decided to look for a more accessible challenge that would allow me to be the best school leader that I can be and make a real and positive impact on the lives of the children and adults I worked with.

Sep 2016 - Jun 2017

Head Teacher

Essendon Cofe Primary Hertfordshire County Council

Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

I improved the school from being one of the lowest-performing bottom 40% to one that was in top 1st quartile for English Writing (2016), top 8th of the first quartile for Reading (2016) and 46th percentile for Maths (2016). Overall, the school became ranked among the top 30 of all similar schools (2016), which was a superb achievement especially given the school's high levels of deprivation and historically poor attendance (which also saw a major upturn during my tenure).

Apr 2013 - Aug 2016

Head Of School

Boston

Secondment to a school outside Boston to lead Teaching and Learning. Managed to forge a strong teaching and learning team together from one that had been fractured, disillusioned and had lost focus.
