  Barbara Bernstein is a radio and video producer, musician, composer and performance artist. She has produced many award winning nationally broadcast radio documentaries and features, including The Malling of America, Rivers That Were, Salmonlands, Urban Green, Sculpted By Fire, Heavy Weather, Fighting Goliath, about the frenetic exploitation of the Canadian tar sands and its rippling effects across the continent; and Sacrifice Zones, about the pressure to turn the Pacific Northwest into a fossil fuel export hub. Her work has aired on NPR's Justice Talking, the National Radio Project’s Making Contact, PRI’s Outright Radio, Alternative Radio and many public radio stations including WBEZ, KQED, Oregon Public Radio, New York State Public Radio and the Pacifica Network. Her documentaries and features have received numerous NFCB Golden Reel Awards as well as awards from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and the Castle Heritage Award from the Center for Columbia River History. She produced a film documentary on food justice called Gaining Ground, with director Elaine Velazquez in 2016 and recently released a radio documentary, Sacrifice Zones, aired on Making Contact in July and October 2017.Barbara posts the popular and topical weekly environment show on KBOO-FM, LOCUS FOCUS. Barbara was Western Knight Fellow at USC Annenberg School for Communication’s program on Water and the New West in 2002. In 2004 she attended the Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment at the University of Colorado at Boulder and in 2006 was a workshop participant in the SoundVision Science Literacy Project at KQED in San Francisco.Besides producing radio she plays viola, Venezuelan cuatro and guitar in Padam Padam, a French Cabaret and Tango band.
