About Barbara Burton - Championing Artisans For The Circular Economy
Hi, I’m Barbara Burton. In 2018, I had the incredible honor of being named one of the BBC’s 100 Women of the World, a recognition that means so much to me because it reflects a journey of resilience, transformation, and a deep passion for change.I’m the founder of Ēvolve Denim, a social venture dedicated to reclaiming the value of denim. We give deadstock, donated, and cherished jeans a new lease of life, saving them from landfills and turning them into something truly special. But Ēvolve Denim is about more than creating beautiful, sustainable fashion. It’s about creating opportunities, rebuilding lives, and empowering communities through our core pillars: ReNew, RePurpose, and ReBuildLives. My journey hasn’t been a typical one. After spending over 15 years in personal development and life coaching, life threw me a curveball in my late 50s when I found myself behind bars. That experience opened my eyes to the struggles women face in prison and the challenges they endure upon release. Meeting those incredible yet often ‘forgotten women’ changed my perspective—and my mission. That’s where my promise to drive real change began. Before Ēvolve Denim, I started BehindBras, a project designed to help women with lived experience of the criminal justice system find purpose and meaningful work in fashion and retail. It taught me the power of resilience and community and sparked my love for empowering people through creativity. Now, with Ēvolve Denim, I’m building something that combines sustainability with social impact. My vision is to transform donated denim into a premium collection while training individuals to become skilled artisans. These artisans are at the heart of what we do, creating not just apparel but a movement—one that connects people, fosters economic independence, and makes a real difference.I believe in collaboration and meaningful conversations to tackle overproduction and waste in the fashion industry. Through partnerships with brands and the creation of community hubs, Ēvolve Denim is working towards a world where fashion has purpose and every piece tells a story. If this resonates with you, let’s make it happen together. DM me or email me at barbara.burton@evolve-denim.org to help build the collection, support crowdfunding efforts, and make a positive impact by reducing waste and inspiring artisans.Transforming Denim, Inspiring Change—one stitch at a time.

On the 21st November, we held the latest in the annual Chelmsford Cathedral Days. The Theme this year was the efficacy of the penal system. The day was organised in conjunction with Ivor Moody at the Cathedral and Sarah Sullivan at Brentwood Ursuline School. We had advertised this conference on the AQA Sociology Teachers Page on Facebook. We had a number of schools from Essex, Suffolk and London. Over 300 delegates in all. Students listened to a number of presentations; from a former gang member - Gavin McKenna, from the former Governor of Wandsworth and Highdown Prison - Ian Bickers and from Barbara Burton, the founder of a company called Behind Bras. Barbara has been in prison and shared her experiences of the prison system and how it is particularly chaotic for women. In addition to these adult and professional presenters Antony Nash Y13 at Drapers’ Academy gave a presentation on the topic of media and crime, and, a small group of students from Brentwood Ursuline gave a presentation on Nature vs. Nurture debate. All presentations were developed by students discussing the content in groups, then this was followed by questions from the floor addressed to the presenters. The day was very well received by students and staff. Students were professional and academically curious. Fantastic observations were offered and insightful questions delivered. Some students used the opportunity to network and spoke to the professionals about careers in their respective fields. Most of the students (not Drapers’ Academy or Brentwood Ursuline) who attended were charged £5. After we have taken away our costs we will have generated a surplus of £400. We will split the between a charity dedicated to penal reform and the rehabilitation of offenders and a local food bank in Harold Hill.
