The CORE Institute Specialty Hospital specializes in spine and orthopedic procedures. I was recruited to provide oversight and leadership to the Accounting Operations, Revenue Cycle, and Supply Chain Management departments. I managed three direct reports and sixteen total staff. The hospital was in a state of transition, having just come out of bankruptcy and juggling new ownership and systems. I incorporated internal controls and process improvements in case acceptance, inventory purchasing, and statistical reporting to improve profitability, accuracy, and efficiency. I formulated a method to track inventory across nonintegrated systems and provide the foundation for case profitability analysis and implant standardization. I created a platform to pull data from the EHR system and generated actionable performance indicators to monitor volume and charges, as well as analyze payor contracts.I assisted in acquiring financing for $6M of equipment and instrumentation purchases and a $10M construction loan. I introduced cash flow management into the budget to monitor working capital needs and debt covenants. I analyzed significant accounting issues such as goodwill impairment, contractual allowances, leases, bad debt, and obsolete inventory. I worked with external teams to prepare for the annual audits, tax returns, 401k audits, cost reports, and meaningful use reports. I provided weekly operational statistics to the senior leadership team, and monthly financials and analyses to the Board of Directors and owners.

HPP helps small to medium-sized companies use business intelligence to identify performance gaps and focus corrective action. I collaborated on the development of the assessment tools using extensive financial statement and ratio analyses, and created staff surveys using the COSO framework to analyze fraud risk.I provided Controller/CFO-level consulting services to clients with revenues ranging from $4M to $75M, primarily in healthcare, retail, and various business services. I oversaw client g/l management; financial reporting creation and communication; budgeting; business insurances; employee benefits; payroll; hiring and development of staff; and internal control review, implementation, and documentation. I found employee embezzlement that cost a client over $800,000, and provided $400,000 in tax savings for a client through analysis of its inventory and revenue recognition policies.Special projects included supervising the design and implementation of NetSuite ERP system conversions for clients, including inventory, payroll, commission, and sales tax modules; analyzing intellecutal property valuations; using DMAIC methodologies to create a tool to automate percentage of completion calculations and identify budget performance gaps; helping focus collection efforts for an occupational health client with over 6,000 invoices and extensive past due accounts to increase cash flow and working capital; and reconstructing and reconciling two years of general ledger activity that has been lost due to employee fraud.

I returned to public accounting to perform financial statement audits after providing Controller/CFO functions in the private sector. Because of my experience, I worked on publicly held clients that were new and required a great deal of initial planning and supervision. My engagements were frequently staffed by junior associates for me to train and mentor, helping them develop skills to run their own engagements. Focusing on audit efficiency, I created Excel-based work papers for complex areas such as stock option compensation, earnings per share calculations, and financial statement analytics that became standardized templates for use on other engagements.

A1 was the smallest company I've ever been associated with but it introduced me to the unique challenges and serious commitment of starting and running a business. I performed all accounting, financial, payroll, and income tax reporting for this start-up home improvement business. Through automated templates I created, salesmen charged consistently, inventory was better controlled, and customers received informative estimates. I learned new skills - designing marketing literature and advertisements, working trade shows, performing customer sales, and determining pricing of products and services to achieve desired profit levels.

Managed accounting, finance, and human resource functions of a hi-tech manufacturing company with operations in Colorado Springs, North Carolina, Mexico, Singapore, and Malaysia. Contended with five different foreign currencies, language barriers, and each operation using a different reporting system. About half-way into my tenure the CFO left, and I assumed that role's responsibilities in addition to my original responsibilities as a controller. I helped restructure $21M of debt, put controls in place to get accounts receivable at an acceptable level, implemented departmental budgets and reporting, and had month end close down to five days, complete with fully documented analytical reviews.

Managed accounting and financial operations for a publicly-traded holding company of boutique casinos in Colorado, Aruba, St. Maarten, Krygystan, and Ecuador, and a bingo supply company in Alaska. I supervised the reporting of all the properties; managed all the controllers; and was responsible for the SEC financial statements, disclosures, and initial write-up of the MD&A. It took a lot of effort to get reporting up to speed and manage cash flow in a highly competitive and risky environment.

I hired and trained five full-time accounting staff; created a reporting process to track the profitability of each production; developed a more efficient way of managing time keeping and payment of outsourced personnel who, for labor law reasons, had to be accounted for as employees; and managed cash flow.
