About Barbara Hensley

I am an entrepreneur and visionary known for founding the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer. After losing both sisters to breast cancer, I created a unique nonprofit and retail model to provide assistance to women and their families in our community experiencing financial distress.During my sisters’ combined 6-year struggle with breast cancer, I saw women facing unnecessary hardships on top of their battles with breast cancer. I saw the need to accelerate direct aid to these women, giving them hope and a greater ability to focus on healing. It is my dream that the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer retail stores and foundation continue to find innovative ways to spread hope in the Twin Cities' breast cancer community.FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTSThe hope-driven design has resulted in essential partnerships with 8 Twin Cities' hospitals to provide on-the-spot, emergency financial assistance to women undergoing treatment. In doing so, the wait period for receiving aid in urgent situations is drastically reduced. The ongoing services provided are:•Emergency assistance for rent, utilities, childcare and transportation•The delivery of nutritious “Meals that Heal” •Early detection education and screening programsGREEN RETAIL Green retail is crucial to my overall vision. It is not only a way for the Hope Chest to be environmentally sustainable; it is a way to ensure sustainable contributions to our programs. Hope Chest stores in St. Paul and Orono accept donated high-end, new and used clothing, furniture and home decor. SPEAKINGBehind the pursuit of every entrepreneurial endeavor there is a story; mine involves turning the impact of breast cancer on my life into something greater. My story and experiences in the worlds of breast cancer, social entrepreneurism and business have resulted in local and national speaking opportunities. During which, I stress the importance of turning one's initial passion into a concept and that concept into an executable plan.
