Her reputation as a successful turnaround and transformational leader established, she started being recruited for even more challenging CIO roles. She was recruited by Toyota having spent a short fourteen months as the CIO for MicroAge. She was recruited from MicroAge by Toyota to transform an IT function not keeping pace with the dramatic growth of the business in North America. As CIO of Toyota, she was responsible for modernizing the company’s technology, the IT organization, and governance practices. In addition to her CIO role, she also led the University of Toyota that was responsible to the professional development of all Toyota staff as well as the training support for all Lexus & Toyota dealership technicians. Barbara was the founder of the first business support network for women in Toyota. She established her own business in 2013 specializing in Executive Coaching for "C"-SUITE executives and their direct reports as well as a focus on CIO’s and senior IT management. She serves as a coach for IDG's CIO Executive Council’s Pathways Program as well as coaching clients directly in both private and public sector IT as part of her consulting company.

She established the first digital strategies for the web by partnering with the Toyota marketing division as early as 1999, implemented a big data strategy, and completely replaced and modernized every core application in the company. Her work in transforming the IT organization model and creating an environment focused on professional development and career management for IT staff gained industry recognition for advancing the IT operating and organizational model and how it can effectively align with the business. Was referred to by the old guard tech execs who were mainframe centric as "The Queen of Deviant Technology". A proud moniker I have carried with me ever since. -
Director Techology ServicesMiller & Paine Department Stores Apr 1973 - Dec 1985This was one of the last of the old full line independent owned department store chains. HQ in Lincoln, NE and in the same family for over 104 years. I was recruited from there by American Express in 1985 and by 1987 they were bought out by Dillards department stores. I started as a temporary Assistant to the President of the company and within a year allowed to start the first word processing department growing it over the years to eventually being responsible for all company automation. This store had a reputation for innovating with technology even as a privately held three store chain in the midwest. It was one of the first retail stores to install point of sale cash registers, deployed the very first bar code technology, had on line merchandise ordering to NY buying offices, telephone supported dictation service to all department management for internal memos and customer correspondence as a virtual, centralized service to name just a few.
