Responsible for all aspects of product development, from product definition to prioritization, to development, to QA, to build/release, to deployment, across seven different client platforms and a cloud-based services platform. I unified the product management and engineering organizations, resulting in a high-performing global team that efficiently and economically delivered top quality products and services. Through my leadership of the operations team, I strengthened the partnership between product development and operations, enabling us to trouble-shoot and resolve production issues in a very timely manner. It also enabled us to do just-in-time scaling of the production network as new services drove new demands in support of our rapidly growing global Wi-Fi network.
  • Ipass
    Cto
    Ipass Dec 2007 - May 2015
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
In my CTO role at iPass, I led a small team researching technologies to enhance the iPass product portfolio. I led a significant cross-team project to introduce Big Data technologies to iPass, that enabled us to derive business value from the myriad of Wi-Fi network data that we got from our users. I established technology partnerships with leading mobile platform providers, which resulted in iPass being the first mobile application developer to gain access to private captive portal APIs. By leveraging these APIs we delivered a richer, more seamless Wi-Fi experience on mobile devices. I also authored numerous patents and managed the iPass patent portfolio, in addition to being responsible for IT Security and Compliance. As the technical voice for iPass, I gave regular presentations on our technology to customers, partners and industry leaders.
  • Ipass
    Vice President, Engineering
    Ipass Feb 2008 - Apr 2012
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
As Vice President, Engineering, I was responsible for the global iPass development team (approx. 150 engineers in California and India). We delivered the Open Mobile platform for business travelers on laptops, smartphones and tablets. I led a complete overhaul of our engineering practices and culture, transitioning from an inefficient waterfall development methodology to an agile methodology that we adapted to cater to the complexities of a globally distributed team. I aligned the two engineering teams into an effective organization, capable of rapidly delivering hiqh quality products and services, as if no geographic boundary existed.
  • Ipass
    Vice-President, Architecture And Design
    Ipass Jul 2006 - Jan 2008
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
After iPass acquired GoRemote, and gained a substantial development team in Bangalore, India, my primary role was to ensure the successful delivery of products and services from our globally distributed development team. I provided technical leadership and architectural oversight, and also focused on best practices to ensure that the two teams (in California and India) were aligned and able to deliver on the iPass vision.
  • Ipass
Client Architect, Then Director Of Advanced Technology
    Ipass Sep 2002 - Jul 2006
    Chicago, Illinois, Us
My first role at iPass was to architect the iPassConnect 3.0 connection manager, which enabled business travelers to connect to the Internet over local Dial, Wi-Fi or Ethernet connections. Upon delivery of iPassConnect 3.0, my next role was to research additional technologies that would add value to the iPass product portfolio. I represented iPass at, and was an editor for, the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Trusted Network Connect (TNC) working group, defining industry standards for endpoint integrity.
  • Peregrine Systems
    Director Of Product Architecture
    Peregrine Systems Apr 2001 - Sep 2002
    Us
Peregrine acquired Extricity in April 2001. After the acquisition, the Extricity team was chartered with building a next-generation application development platform for Peregrine. My role was to design the platform and provide oversight to the development team, and support key 3rd party partners in their technical integration projects.
  • Extricity
    Director Of Product Architecture
    Extricity Sep 1999 - Apr 2001
    Us
Responsible for the technical direction for the Extricity B2B product line. My role was technical (authoring product specifications and reviewing developer designs and implementations), managerial (managed team of developers, drove the successful transition from a waterfall to an Extreme development methodology, promoted best practices, arranged regular brown-bag presentations), and cross-functional (liaison to sales and customers, managed support escalations, trained bootcamp participants).
  • General Magic
    Senior Engineer, Then Technical Director
    General Magic Nov 1992 - Aug 1999
    Us
Core member of Telescript development team, delivering innovative mobile agent technology. My initial focus area at General Magic was to build a scalable two-way Telescript email gateway that enabled mobile agents to communicate with traditional Internet email servers. While Telescript was a technological success, it was a business failure. General Magic then changed its focus to building a network service that provided subscriber access to email, calendar, contacts, news and stock portfolio through a patented state-of-the-art voice interface. I ramped up quickly on voice technologies, and delivered core service elements for the Portico Virtual Assistant (these elements were later deployed in the GM OnStar voice recognition system).
  • Retix
    Senior System Architect
    Retix Jan 1986 - Oct 1992
Responsible for X.400 (email) product development. Chaired X.400 Special Interest Working Group at NIST. Developed and presented two day X.400 tutorial at industry conferences.
