I started Evolving Communications, a multimedia production company, because of all of the scientists and engineers who I met and worked with during my tenure at the National Academy of Sciences [NAS] Television Office. These ‘unsung heroes’ had compelling stories that needed to be told and shared. This fascination continued when as lead creative of Evolving Communications, we produced more than 260 profiles for the National Medals of Science and of Technology & Innovation.My curiosity streak led me to collaborations with international NGOs always searching for the story. Whether for The World Bank, the African Development Bank, The Global Knowledge Initiative and The Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria, I have had the honor and fortune of working nine times in Africa on projects ranging from adolescent health in Mozambique to coffee growing in Rwanda to interviewing Archbishop Desmond Tutu on forgiveness.A transforming event, I was one of eight producers worldwide selected by The Global Fund’s Access to Life Project, to document the stories of people in the Townships of Cape Town, South Africa living with HIV -- how they struggled with the illness and also flourished after taking lifesaving ARV treatment. 2020 brought great challenges as well as opportunities. While Board Chair of Docs In Progress, I stepped into the role of Interim Executive Director. Because of COVID, this tenure was a bit longer than planned but the experiences and people I have encountered have been memorable. Giving teens the ability to craft their own story and have a voice where some never had one is burnished in my mind.And throughout this decade, I have been happy to be back working at the National Academies in a great array of projects, topics, and people. Glad to report that 'science is back'.
