About Barb Kermode-Scott Mihm

Always busy and always looking for new opportunities too. I'm an experienced medical writer, editor, author, and physician engagement expert. I have specialized in developing communications and writing for physicians, pharmacists, and patients, but can write most anything (except speeches, poetry and fiction!) I bring senior health care management skills to the table as well. I'm a graduate of the UK’s highly competitive, award-winning Graduate Management Training Scheme (General Management), The Scheme tells potential recruits: “You’ll enjoy mentoring, support and first-class training from some of the most brilliant minds in and outside the NHS.” I did. I will be forever grateful. http://www.nhsgraduates.co.uk/the-schemeI enjoyed exceptional opportunities during my training and career as a hospital manager in England. Since moving to Canada I've developed new skills as a freelance journalist, book author, medical writer, editor and publisher, physician communications advisor and genealogy/life stories researcher & author. I've run my own business, BKS Medical Communications, for 30 years, and worked full time without a lull for all that time. The key to finding new assignments and contracts, and keeping the regular ones, has been to always do my best. I continuously strive to exceed the client or employer's needs, provide excellent work 100% of the time, be super easy to work with, be reliable, solve problems, work on conflict resolution and mediation, build relationships and bring new ideas. There have been so many rewards for all the hard work, not least being meeting the most wonderful people from all across Canada, and making so many long-lasting friendships with clients, colleagues and interviewees from around the world. I also undertake genealogy research.

  • The College Of Family Physicians Of Canada
Editor, E-News, National E-Newsletter For Canada'S Family Physicians
The College Of Family Physicians Of Canada Jan 2006 - Dec 2015
    Mississauga, Ontario
I helped create the College of Family Physicians of Canada's electronic newsletter E-NEWS in 2005, in collaboration with the College's staff in Mississauga, Ontario, and edited this publication for ten years. Despite living many miles away from Mississauga, I was always in close contact with other members of the editorial team, CFPC staff, board members, physicians and College partners to deal with all questions, challenges, etc. By working evenings & weekends as well as usual office hours I was able to help national office staff deal with the needs of CFPC members and provincial chapter staffs in different time zones. Having a flexible schedule was also useful for putting out fires quickly when needed, and meeting publication deadline demands. I was honored to help each president of the College draft their monthly message to members.

"George Wyse, Robert Lampard, Barbara Kermode-Scott and Al-Karim Walli have given us a book which will be read with fascination and respect not only by those who have lived through the tumultuous changes in Calgary over the past 80 years, but also by health professionals and healthcare system builders far beyond Southern Alberta. Cardiac patients and their families will find much of interest here – helpful text, interspersed throughout, outlines key cardiovascular therapeutics and investigative technologies in enough detail to provide context for the historical focus of the book. Enthusiasm and optimism fairly burst from the page in the many quotes from individuals – medical and surgical clinicians, scientists, nurses, technologists, community leaders, patients and philanthropists."
