Every so often a programmer is given an opportunity to publish their work as a sellable product. When I joined Xcitek Solutions Plus I was given just that. Aligning with a very aggressive business knowledge expert and salesman extraordinaire we built and sold a Corporate Action management system that far exceeded industry expectations. Armed with ODBC and VB 3 knowledge I was able architect the XSP application as a multi-tiered client server app where a single instance communicated with Oracle, Sybase, DB2 and SQL Server backend databases. By the time of my departure, the development team grew from 1 to 45 with an additional 10 for QA and client support. The application was upgraded to VB 6 during this same time.

As a Senior Consultant with DPAI I was welcomed to their Cognos / C product development team. For Owens Corning Windows and Door manufacturing we developed a cradle-to-grave information and production management system using Cognos's QUIZ, QUICK and QTP 4th GL languages. This was long before Cognos became an analytics player in the BI stack. I was presented with an opportunity of a life time when they created a micro-platform development / R&D group and requested that I become a member because of my passion for Visual Basic, SQL Server and Event Driven programming. Our first project was for Majestic Steel where we used RAD (rapid application development) as our project strategy and I was tasked to create, in real-time, the user interface while the project coordinator and Majestic employees determined the work items. I was using VB 3.0 with Microsoft’s first incarnation of SQL Server/Sybase (4.21a). I learned real quick that ODBC was by far the fastest method of data integration versus Microsoft’s recommendation of JET.

I had the opportunity to work closely with the accounting department that kept the engineers in check and a production facility that could cut sheets of birch faster and more precise than a surgeon during a heart bypass. Delivering data to the sound geniuses who designed the speaker units and required production floor test results only added to the misery when I had to resign to move back to Alabama.I am still a proud owner of Klipsch speakers and one day, my favorite child will inherit them.
