As part of a small ICT team utilising in-house and vendor resources, I supported Maritime New Zealand, MPRS and RCC through remote and direct assistance, and was tasked with implementing a new asset-tracking and call-logging system, as well as improving imaging, administration and collaboration needs. The role involved both teamwork and the ability to work unsupervised, supporting a complex and demanding 24/7 operation.

Following the disestablishment of Sealed Air’s on-site IT support, I took a role providing procurement and asset-management services to the staff at Victoria University, but was keen to return to a more varied and challenging position.

As the sole Wellington-based Systems Analyst, but part of a global support team, my role was to provide excellent end-user support to the Wellington and Christchurch sites. A 2nd/3rd level systems support role, it encompassed all aspects of IS support and implementation, from procurement, asset-tracking and training to fault rectification, project work and secure hardware disposal. The primarily autonomous role involved a great deal of flexibility and adaptability, and ensured I gained familiarity with a diverse range of support methodologies. I’m proud that during my tenure I overhauled the asset disposal system and created a barcoded asset-tracking standard which was adopted across the AP region. I also completed several major rollouts of Windows, Office and production-critical systems.

Contracted to Mobil Oil as part of their XME Migration from Windows 2000 to XP, I assisted in upgrading the entire Wellington operation, and was asked to stay on to assist in the upgrade of their Fiji offices in Suva and Nadi.

A contract role taken only three days after I arrived in New Zealand, I was dropped into a frenetically paced helpdesk position supporting the Ministry of Health’s National Immunisation Register, taking calls from DHB staff and ensuring their issues were resolved in a timely fashion.

Starting as a contractor before being offered the job permanently, I was the sole onsite support for The University of Edinburgh’s Accommodation Services, a partly private organization with a remit to utilise student accommodation for private rental outside term time.

After travelling through South-East Asia for a while, I took a contract in Australia with Auscript Pty. Ltd., initially just doing data-entry, but quickly being promoted to running their electronic court system in the Thredbo Civil Inquiry. Auscript also sponsored my visa extension allowing me to remain in Australia for an additional six months to complete the Inquiry.

A short contracting role taken to complete the upgrade of the Bank’s computers from Windows 3.11 to Windows NT to allow network functionality and ensure Year 2000 compliance for their systems. I saved the Bank a substantial cost in licensing upgrades by networking their older Windows 3.11 machines and avoiding the costs of an operating system upgrade.

Beginning as a data-entry position done during University holidays, I was offered a permanent computer support role shortly after graduation but, after two years, decided to contract to build funds for a round-the-world ticket.
