In the last few years my original rock band opened for rock/ blues legend Johnny Winter, I’ve had several solo exhibitions for my art, and I’ve moved towards closing out 30 years of motivating high school students and adults to be the best they can be. There’s been plenty of opportunity to use that left brain-right brain mix as a counselor/school psychologist in public education – collaborating with parents and students to solve problems while adding value as a team member to improve the system as a whole. Most of my work as a counselor has been supporting students who didn’t fit into the traditional school program. These students may have psychological, social, or emotional problems, low motivation, substance abuse, medical, or disciplinary issues. My job has been to create a path in education to allow them to succeed. I’ve had to develop motivational tools, clear communication and listening skills, salesmanship, and the ability to be direct while still compassionate. As a school psychologist I’ve had to administer a variety of diagnostic tests and interpret and report on the results, both in written and verbal forms. Often this results in having to tell a parent that their student may have a learning disability – and working with staff and parents to develop strategies for their child to be successful academically.I’ve also created programs (Career Center), supervised employees, headed our WASC accreditation team, and been the leader of our GED Testing Program. I’m valued for my creative input, sense of humor, and ability to get the job done.I like to think that many of these skills translate well to a wide variety of positions. I’m intrigued and motivated to do something different – especially since I’m a quick learner and have a substantial history as a professional. I’m choosing to work after leaving public education and look forward to talking to your company or college/university.
