For more than twenty years, Barney has been engaged in a range of initiatives involving government, industry, academia and NGOs in the UK, EU and around the world aimed at promoting good standards of science, ethics and animal welfare. In particular, the development and effective implementation of animal research policy, legislation and regulation; robust processes of ethical review (including project evaluation and the harm-benefit analysis); ensuring the fullest implementation of the 3Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement); supporting the accelerated development and uptake of non-animal technologies and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs); understanding the behaviour and meeting the needs of animals; achieving a good ‘culture of care’ within institutions; and meeting expectations on openness and transparency.
