Doctoral student in the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh working on RNA-sequencing in mice and humans to uncover the molecular signature of late-maturing excitatory neurons in the paralaminar (PL) amygdala, with the hopes of identifying transcriptional biomarkers for neurological and psychiatric disease.

Research associate in the lab of Dr. Shawn Sorrells at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Neuroscience. The lab studies the molecular and cellular basis of neurodevelopment, particularly in the temporal lobe, and the implications of the neurobiology on brain plasticity and how it may govern the onset of neurological and psychiatric illness. My work specifically focuses on the optimization of RNA sequencing of neurons in the paralaminar nucleus (PL) region of the amygdala in both mouse and human models, and subsequently utilizing computational methods (neuroinformatics) to analyze transcriptomics data from the region. Successfully developing transcriptomics datasets in the PL will allow us to garner insight into what further distinguishes these cells from others in the limbic system/amygdala and lead to identifying important functional patterns in the PL that may provide deeper understandings of neurological and psychiatric disorder onset, as well as potential areas for intervention.

Undergraduate Researcher at the lab of Dr. Stephen Meriney; University of Pittsburgh Department of Neuroscience. I studied the effects of aging on synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction. In my work, I have acquired laboratory procedure knowledge including but not limited to: Animal dissection and surgery, PCRs, protein quantification, electrophysiology, morphology, immunohistochemistry and high-powered microscopy, and grant-writing/experimental project design. My work culminated in an Honors Undergraduate Thesis earning an ‘A’ grade, and was a third author contribution to a publication in the Journal of Physiology.
