Barrett, a Senior Fulbright Specialist, Founding Chair of the Communication Department and Professor of Communication at Lasell College, created the Communication BS and MS degrees, grew enrollment to nearly 400 students, hired 9 full time faculty and recruited 40 part time faculty. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Communication Graduate Program. Previously, for 10 years, she was Associate Professor at Boston University, College of Communication, and Founding Director of “Communication, Conflict and the Media,” the Boston University Summer Program in Dublin, Ireland. From 1997 -1994, Dr. Barrett served as a Founding Educational Co-Chair, with Professor Emeritus Marvin Kalb, of the Institute on the Media and American Democracy at Harvard University. During the 2003-4 academic year, Dr. Barrett was Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Dublin City University in Ireland, where she taught in the graduate Journalism Program and conducted research focused on the media coverage of the conflict and peace process in Northern Ireland. After her return from Ireland, she was appointed Associate Dean at Quinnipiac University, School of Communications in Hamden, CT. Dr. Barrett has taught several COM undergraduate and graduate courses, including Media Relations, Organizational Communication, Media Ethics, Corporate Communication, Communication Strategies for Conflict Resolution and Negotiations, Understanding Mass Media, Ethical Issues in Organizational Communication and Intercultural Communication. Her research interests focus on conflict resolution strategies and political communication. She has published her research in scholarly journals and presented her findings at several national and international communication conferences. Since 2001, Dr. Barrett has served on the Board of Judges for the Profiles in Courage essay of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. Dr. Barrett earned her Doctorate and Master's degrees from Harvard.

University wide responsibilities included services on the Core Curriculum Committee, Academic Review Committee, Faculty Research Committee and Associate Dean’s Council. -

Served as a member, DCU Faculty Program Boards for the MS in Science Communication and the MA in Journalism.

Recruited and involved over 1,000 participants during the 8 years the Institute existed.Under an $825,000 Knight Foundation 3 year grant, responsible for the design, development and delivery of media education workshops at five university sites in collaboration with programs at two Harvard graduate schools (Shorenstein Center, JFKSG & Programs in Professional Education, HGSE): UT Austin, U of MO at Columbia, The Newhouse School at Syracuse, USC Annenberg School, and UMiami, College of Communication.
