Dr. Janice M. Barrett, a Senior Fulbright Specialist, Founding Chair of the Communication Department and Professor of Communication at Lasell College, created the Communication BS and MS degrees, grew enrollment to nearly 400 students, hired 9 full time faculty and recruited 40 part time faculty. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Communication Graduate Program. Previously, for 10 years, she was Associate Professor at Boston University, College of Communication, and Founding Director of “Communication, Conflict and the Media,” the Boston University Summer Program in Dublin, Ireland. From 1997 -1994, Dr. Barrett served as a Founding Educational Co-Chair, with Professor Emeritus Marvin Kalb, of the Institute on the Media and American Democracy at Harvard University. During the 2003-4 academic year, Dr. Barrett was Fulbright Scholar in Residence at Dublin City University in Ireland, where she taught in the graduate Journalism Program and conducted research focused on the media coverage of the conflict and peace process in Northern Ireland. After her return from Ireland, she was appointed Associate Dean at Quinnipiac University, School of Communications in Hamden, CT. Dr. Barrett has taught several COM undergraduate and graduate courses, including Media Relations, Organizational Communication, Media Ethics, Corporate Communication, Communication Strategies for Conflict Resolution and Negotiations, Understanding Mass Media, Ethical Issues in Organizational Communication and Intercultural Communication. Her research interests focus on conflict resolution strategies and political communication. She has published her research in scholarly journals and presented her findings at several national and international communication conferences. Since 2001, Dr. Barrett has served on the Board of Judges for the Profiles in Courage essay of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. Dr. Barrett earned her Doctorate and Master's degrees from Harvard.

Responsibilities included academic advising, faculty and staff supervision, student academic services, including disciplinary cases and student appeals, course scheduling, curriculum, policy and program and creating the proposal for development of the BA in Journalism degree (which was approved by the Quinnipiac faculty and the State of Connecticut), design of school wide assessment procedures, preparation for accreditation review. University wide responsibilities included services on the Core Curriculum Committee, Academic Review Committee, Faculty Research Committee and Associate Dean’s Council.

2003-4 Fulbright Scholar and Senior Lecturer Awarded a year long Fulbright grant to create and teach two courses in the graduate program, The Media and Conflict and Writing for Communication at the School of Communication, and one course in the undergraduate program in Journalism, Dublin City University and to conduct research on political communication issues related to the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process. Served as a member, DCU Faculty Program Boards for the MS in Science Communication and the MA in Journalism.

Co-founded Institute, in collaboration with Marvin Kalb, Director (Emeritus) of the Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University; launched and taught in eight Institute programs; planned curriculum, selected readings and established Institute schedules; recruited and hired faculty; recruited participants; awarded scholarships to participants and assigned graduate assistantships; wrote program brochures and created binders; implemented marketing strategies and distributed press releases; edited Institute’s annual publication, Curriculum Compendium.; served as the Institute’s website editor. Recruited and involved over 1,000 participants during the 8 years the Institute existed.Under an $825,000 Knight Foundation 3 year grant, responsible for the design, development and delivery of media education workshops at five university sites in collaboration with programs at two Harvard graduate schools (Shorenstein Center, JFKSG & Programs in Professional Education, HGSE): UT Austin, U of MO at Columbia, The Newhouse School at Syracuse, USC Annenberg School, and UMiami, College of Communication.

Founding Director, Boston University Summer Program “Conflict, Communication and the Media,” Dublin, IrelandCreated curriculum for two courses; recruited and hired Irish professors, journalists and elected officials to teach in an intensive, 8 credit, 7 week program in Conflict, Communication and the Media in Ireland. Created collaborative partnerships with 3 Irish universities; Dublin City University, University of Ulster in Derry and the National University of Ireland in Galway. That program has grown today to over 100 students enrolled yearly.Promoted by Boston University to Associate rank after extensive internal and external review process. Awarded a full year sabbatical for the 2003-4 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar. Elected by faculty to Academic Affairs Committee, Chair of the Budget Committee and Vice-Chair of the University Faculty Council, which represents over 2,500 BU faculty members. Member of the Executive Committee, Faculty Council. Faculty member responsible for research, publishing and teaching in Organizational Communication, Conflict Resolution and Negotiations, Political Communication, Media Relations, Corporate Public Relations, Crisis Communication, Intercultural Communication, Mass Communications, and Writing for Communication at the graduate and undergraduate levels; significantly revised syllabi for several courses; responsible for student advising and Master's thesis supervision; coordinator of department graduate level comprehensive Master's degree examinations. Elected by faculty to membership on the College Curriculum Committee and as Vice Chair of the Boston University Faculty Council.

Responsible for all of the college’s internal and external communications, publicity, advertising, publications and videos in support of the college's strategies for development, admissions, alumni relations and public image. Planned and implemented all external relations activities and major college events; oversaw and edited all college publications, brochures and catalogues; managed media coverage and press relations; planned public affairs agendas and governmental relations; orchestrated college meetings with community leaders and elected representatives; wrote speeches, articles and correspondence on behalf of administrative and academic members of the college community.
