Profile bio

About Dr. Julien Barrier

At ICFO, my research intersects condensed matter physics and photonics. I use interdisciplinary methods, combining electronic transport techniques with infrared far-field irradiation, to create, control and explore novel electronic phases in moiré quantum materials. This research has the potential to bring new understanding into the role of the quantum metric on strongly correlated electrons, which could be a steppingstone towards the creation of new optoelectronic devices such as photonic diodes, optical transistors and logic circuits. This could also lead to new concepts such as topological nanophotonics for optical information processing. For my research results I have been awarded the "Engineer of the future" prize from French magazine l'Usine Nouvelle in 2019 and the Distinguished Student Award from the American Physical Society in 2022. In 2023, I received the Albert Franks Prize "for outstanding contributions to the nanoscale physics of graphene [...]". I received two other prizes from the British Institute of Physics in 2024, in semiconductors physics and superconductivity.

Listed skills include Project Management, Fundraising, Sol Gel Synthesis, Solar Cell Characterisation, and 25 others.
