My career in software engineering spans 15 years, most recently working at Aviva in Norwich. In this time I have helped the Configuration and Change Management teams become more efficient through adding automation to already existing manual processes as well as develop dashboards to give real time MI, by which the Change Management team have been able to react quicker to incidents and ensure their queues are dealt with in priority order.In the three and a half years I spent at the BBC I was involved with the re-launches of the News and Sport sites in 2008, the major overhaul of the News site in 2010 and advised on the Sport refresh in time for the Olympics. I have strong communication skills and am always ready to take the lead on a project. I can also pick up new language and skills very quickly and draw on past experiences where I feel it is of benefit and enabling innovation.My work at the BBC mainly focussed on the client side, ensuring that in line with the BBC’s strict guidelines, that the sites met strict accessibility requirements, in order to be accessible by all and are structured with semantics and SEO at the core. I take a very keen interest in interaction design and ensure that all the software I produce is written to be an enabler for the user, making sure that workflow is kept to a minimum and that visual language is clear and consistent. I have built many of the dynamic components you’ll find on the BBC News and Sport web sites using object-orientated JavaScript – from the interactive slideshows and personalisation through to the live scores on the sports pages. I wrote the revamped Live Event pages, which have really pushed the best of the BBC content during such events as the Arab Spring, Royal Wedding and all major events since.My role at Norwich Union, now Aviva, resulted in a lead role within the Innovation Team and gave me the opportunity to explore the latest technologies and apply them to real business problems.
