Senior R&D Staff

Current

Senior R&D Staff – Radar and Optics Applications Research – National Security Sciences Directorateo Radar and Optics Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Army customers. Mr. Daniel has developed a national reputation in the radar community as an unbiased, fair assessor of radar technology and an innovative problem solver. He has traveled across the United States and even to foreign countries to assess innovative radar technology. He has advanced knowledge of a wide range of principles and disciplines including radar, optics, modeling and simulation, lidar, and communications. He has been tasked with leading a team of SMEs from various Army test centers in the analysis of alternative radar and optical design solutions for the replacement of various precision range instrumentation radars and optical tracking systems, development of radar and optical requirements, analysis of proposed solutions from industry, and review of the development and testing of the selected radar and optical solutions. o Developed methodology for utilizing NEXRAD weather radars to detect and characterize non-meteorological plumes. This methodology utilizes machine learning to more accurately identify non-meteorological classes and utilizes machine learning to optimize the fuzzy logic representation of these classes to increase the efficiency and accuracy of classification when implemented by the Hydrometeor Classification Algorithm (HCA) in the operational NEXRAD radars.o Developed methodology for converting LIDAR point cloud data to CAD drawings for nuclear test setup documentation.o Restructured an RF clutter simulation, based on the interim Billingsley clutter model, to prepare the simulation to be executed in real-time on GPU hardware.o Spear-headed the development of real-time radar environment models to support the injection of simulated radar signals into the processing chain of multiple counter-fire radars.

Jul 2005 - Present

Senior Engineer / Branch Manager

Senior Engineer – Systems Simulations Branch – Branch Manager• Radio Frequency (RF) Digital Threat Simulation Development – developed software to model search and track radars, seekers, system specific computer algorithms, fire units, and missiles. Have experience with various Soviet systems including the SA-2, SA-6, SA-8, SA-10, SA-11, SA-12, SA-15, and SA-20.• Infrared (IR) Digital Threat Simulation Development – developed software to model the IR seeker of several Man-Portable (MANPAD) threat systems and other IR threat systems. The simulations are modeled at the transfer function level of the detail and contain sophisticated optics, gyro, and track processor components. The seekers are modeled to process both point source and extended source target signatures. System modeling experience includes SA-7b, SA-13, SA-18, and QW-1.• Environment Modeling – integrated, tested, and corrected both RF and IR environment simulations. These models were created to simulate the propagation of RF and IR energy in the real-world environment. The RF phenomenology included refraction, clutter, multipath, and atmospheric losses. The IR phenomenology included atmospheric absorption (MODTRAN4-based), celestial and solar effects, obscuration, and weather. Experience with JMOOSE, JMASS EO/IR Environment, JSF SSE, CHAMP, and MODTRAN).• Engineering Analysis – analyzed the effect of developmental and fielded electronic and infrared countermeasure techniques on threat system performance. Evaluated the robustness of these countermeasure techniques against various threat calibrations.• Software Conversion and Tool Development – converted threat models from legacy C++ simulation architecture to a new, more versatile C++ simulation architecture. Re-coded FORTRAN components into C++. Translated MATLAB/Simulink models to C++. Created tools to aid in software conversion processes.
