Imago Media Company was founded in 1997 in New Delhi. In 2007 the Mumbai branch was founded. Under its education division, the Barry John Acting Studios run short-term and long-term professional courses in acting for theatre, television and film. Short courses are arranged for children aged 8 to 16 years in New Delhi only. The company in Mumbai also designs and conducts pre-production workshops for films.

The task was to acquaint Indian students with the major developments that took place in the West, beginning with Greek and Roman theatre, through to the Commedia dell'Arte and its ultimate influence on Moliere and Shakespeare. From there was a further jump to the development of naturalism and psychological realism, and all that the 20th century brought with it.

Theatre Action Group (TAG) was allegedly the most active and most successful theatre company operating in India during this period. It managed to sustain a wide variety of plays of different forms and styles, from plays for children, to musicals, to classics of Greek and Shakespearean tragedy, to horror thrillers, to contemporary experimental works, and to West-End comedies. Many actors went on to secure successful careers in films: Shah Rukh Khan, Manoj Bajpayee and Lillette Dubey most notably.

The NSD Theatre-in-Education Company was the first such professional company of adults working for children in and outside of the education system in India. Comprising mostly trained graduates from the NSD, the company designed and devised plays of educational importance to the learning and behavioural needs of young people of particular ages and social profiles. The plays were usually participatory in nature, engaging the small audiences physically, vocally and creatively at times.
