Up to retirement in March 2012 Barry Joyce led a team of environmental specialists at Derbyshire County Council dealing with archaeology, historic building conservation, historic area conservation, urban design, regeneration, landscape design and ecology. Having trained as an architect he entered the field of planning and then gained a masters degree in building conservation. He developed a particular commitment to area conservation and was seconded by Derbyshire County Council to continue the Civic Trust's influential conservation led regeneration experiment at Wirksworth. This received a Europe Nostra Award and the Royal Town Planning Institute's Annual Award for Planning Achievement.He was appointed MBE for services to conservation in Derbyshire.Currently he chairs the Planning and Conservation Committee for the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the International Council for Sites & Monuments (ICOMOS UK) and is Vice Chairman of the ICOMOS UK World Heritage Committee.He has travelled widely in India and has links with a number of Indian conservation bodies.
