Improve modeling, testing, and diagnostic instrumentation techniques as applied to combustion systems and augmentors. Worked technology development programs for improved performance of gas turbine engine augmentors. Led a 6 person in-house research team in conducting basic and applied research of thermoacoustics and bluff body stabilized flames. Conducted modeling and experimental testing of bluff body stabilized flames using high speed laser diagnostics to better understand flame stability. Secured funding for $1.5M first of it’s kind simultaneous 10 kHz Planer Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) laser system to assessing flame stability. Investigated the cause and effect relationship between chemistry, geometry, flame stability and acoustics on thermoacoustic coupling. Led a 22 member research team in the improvement of models for the prediction of chemical kinetics for JP-8, JET A and alternatively derived jet fuels. Improved model accuracy by a factor of 4. Found key underlying aspects of fuel properties and their effect on flame speed, ignition delay, breakup and atomization.
