Dr. Barry I. Posner is Professor of Medicine & Cell Biology, and Director of the Polypeptide and Protein Hormone Laboratory at McGill University. He was a gold medalist in his graduating class at the University of Manitoba Medical School. In 1970, subsequent to postgraduate work in the US, he was recruited to the Royal Victoria Hospital and McGill University.He has served as Director of the McGill Endocrine Program and Physician-in-Chief at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital; and currently as the Associate Director of the Montreal Diabetes Research Center. His research on insulin signaling led to the discovery of receptors in newly defined target tissues including the brain and vascular endothelial cells. In collaboration with J.Bergeron he identified the endosomal system as a central site for signal transduction. In the late 1980s he discovered the peroxovanadium compounds as potent insulin mimetics; and in elucidating their mechanism of action defined the role of phosphotyrosine phosphatases in regulating Receptor Tyrosine Kinases. His group contributed to recognizing the role of lipid rafts in endosomes as sites of intense signaling. Recently he was in the team which identified new genes for diabetes. He has published over 280 scientific manuscripts, and has delivered numerous prestigious lectures including the Banting and Best Memorial Lecture of the International Diabetes Federation,and the Novartis lecture of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He was elected to Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada, was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada and received the Distinguished Service Award of the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism.Specialties: Negotiations of contracts with Industry, and developing patent protection for new discoveries.
