As detailed in his former employment roles Barry has dealt with anything from small surveys for bats to large-scale monitoring of government environmental schemes to major infrastructure projects covering powerlines, pipelines and major road schemes. He continues to develop novel approaches for survey and assessment, in order to better inform mitigation strategies.Barry has recently been awarded a PhD assessing the value and use of botanical indicators as historic markers in wooded landscapes (woodlands and hedgerows).Barry was involved in developing the ecological assessment criteria for the Hedgerows Regulations 1997 and was the editor of the Defra 'Hedgerow Survey Handbook' (2006) from which he has developed a novel approach to surveying and assessing hedgerows. HEDGES (Hedgerow Ecological Description Grading and Evaluation System) allows levels of recording detail to be tailored to extend to being able to replicate important hedgerows at new sites as compensations for losses. I was part of a dedicated ecology team based in Derbyshire. The company works both UK wide and overseas to deliver innovative and practical solutions to ecological issues. I continued to progress my knowledge and develop novel methods of assessment and ecological assessment and evaluation. I developed methods for surveying and monitoring bats emerging from and entering roosts and to determine their movements in the wider landscape using stereo bat detectors and Infrared camcorders.

For Energyline I helped design powerline routes that do least environmental harm and advise on refurbishments that minimies adverse impacts on ecology.
