Director Of Learning Centers
Norwalk Housing Authority
Founded in 1939, the Norwalk Housing Authority provides affordable housing to low-income residents of Norwalk, Connecticut. Realizing that education is an important factor in breaking the cycle of poverty, NHA created five after-school Learning Centers for residents, spread among the various housing developments. The Learning Centers provided tutoring, homework help, and a variety of other educational programs such as a dedicated instruction in literacy, math, and science.I held three positions at NHA, beginning with being an Educational Coordinator working with students in the centers individually. From there I was promoted to Assistant Director of Learning Centers, where my duties were focused on staff supervision an grant reporting. I gathered the data and wrote the reports for multiple grants totaling well over $1,000,000.As Director of Learning Centers, I was responsible for the overall management of the seven Learning Center sites and their staff. I continued many of my duties as Assistant Director, such as helping to design federal and state grant proposals and carrying out the necessary reporting mechanisms. I worked with a number of local companies and agencies to bring new and exciting learning opportunities to NHA's young residents. I also helped to design, in consultation with my staff, agency-wide educational programs for students. In addition, I was the driving force behind securing a significant grant from Siemens Corporation for the creation of a STEM program. I also participated in the design of, and oversaw NHA’s inclusion into, a city-wide afterschool alliance network.
