The best companies in any industry are known for financial strength that stands the test of time and products that are competitively-priced, with popular features and benefits, that live up to customer expectations, and out-last and out-perform the competition over time. The best companies in any industry are not just competitive in some of these qualities, they excel in all these areas for a broad range of customers. The life insurance industry is no different. The best life insurance companies are likewise distinguished by superior claims-paying ability and products that are competitively-priced, with more access to account values and/or greater guarantees, that live up to customer expectations, and out-last and out-perform the competition. For these reasons, Forbes published a first-of-its-kind ranking of the Best Life Insurance Companies based on BOTH the financial strength of the insurer AND the overall competitiveness of their products. Life insurance has increasingly been promoted as an investment asset, but too many practitioners fail to apply established and proven Prudent Investor principles to the asset that is life insurance, and instead apply prevailing industry marketing practices that are not consistent with, and in some cases actually violate, both these standards of care and guidance from both financial services and life insurance industry authorities. When failure to apply such standards of care leads to complaints, arbitration, and litigation, I am available for consultation, particularly in support of Veralytic subscribers who have been engaged as testifying experts.

FINSECA's focus is to create an environment that enables people to protect & enhance financial well-being for themselves, their families, and their businesses. Currently, regulations in most states for most life insurance product types permit agents, brokers and insurers to to “quote” low premiums while charging HIGH costs withOUT disclosing EITHER those HIGH costs NOR the risks of additional “premium calls” for more than the originally “quoted” premium, or even policy lapse and total loss even when all “quoted” premium were paid. In that such "bait-and-switch" sales practices are antithetical to an environment that enables people to protect & enhance financial well-being for themselves, their families, and their businesses, FINSECA formed a Working Group to advocate for #ClientsBestInterest rules for insuance products based on principles well-established and proven in most every other segment of the financial services industry. I am proud to serve such a Working Group.

Life insurance is increasingly being promoted and considered as an investment asset. However, it remains the last, largest, most-neglected asset on most clients' balance sheets because wealth managers and fiduciaries and even life insurance brokers have struggled with the MANAGEMENT of life insurance as asset for a variety of reasons, namely: Brokers struggle because prevailing industry marketing practices are not consistent with, and in some cases actually violate, the Prudent Investor principals near and dear to wealth managers and fiduciaries,Wealth managers and investment advisors struggle because they have not been able to look up the pricing and performance of life insurance products the way they can for most every other type of asset they manage, and CPAs, tax attorneys, and particularly trustees struggle because they lacked standards for the prudent selection and proper management of life insurance as an asset like they have and follow for most every other type of asset in their care. In response, InvestmentNews asked that I write a monthly column about new best-practices for the prudent selection and proper management of life insurance as an asset, prevailing industry practices now being questioned, and other current events and recent developments. InvestmentNews is the number one source of news to the financial adviser community.

Life insurance is the last, largest, most-neglected asset on most clients' balance sheets because wealth managers and fiduciaries, and even life insurance brokers, have struggled to apply estaiblished and proven Prudent Investor principles to the asset that is life insurance. In response, a group of industry leaders gathered at West Point in April 2013 to finalize a Best Practices Standard for Life Insurance Stewardship. In attendance were representatives of nearly every profession who has clients who own life insurance, to include: the largest trust and estates law firm; the largest TPA of TOLI; the largest association of financial planners; a leading financial planning university; and, most of the largest independent distributors of life insurance. These standards apply the same universal decision‐making framework to life insurance already widely-accepted in the investment business.

In response to the first breach of fiduciary duty lawsuit involving the suitability of a trust-owned life insurance (TOLI) policy, a doubling of FINRA arbitrations involving breach of fiduciary duty for product suitability, increasing litigation against agents and brokers involving product suitability, the New York Producer Disclosure Regulations, and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, advisorFX asked that I a write a regular column about life insurance product suitability. In a series of six (6) articles, I discussed each of the five (5) major factors that determine if/when a life insurance product is appropriate for a given client based on the client's goals and financial situation, and how to measure strengths and weaknesses, prudently select and properly manage life insurance policies/portfolios.
