About Barry Farrimond-Chuong Mbe

I have over 15 years of experience developing, strengthening and leading social enterprises and third-sector arts organisations. I co-founded Open Up Music in 2014, supporting my team in launching a range of successful programmes, including the National Open Youth Orchestra (the world's first disabled-led national youth orchestra) and Open Orchestras (the UK’s largest community of inclusive ensembles.)I specialise in the development and application of accessible music technology, and led the development of the Clarion - an award-winning musical instrument playable with any part of the body, including the eyes. I was awarded an MBE for services to Accessible Music Technology in 2018. Additionally, I'm an actor with over 30 years of experience performing on stage and screen. Notably, I plays the part of Ed Grundy in the long-running BBC Radio 4 soap The Archers and am also the inventor of the Farrimond Friction Hitch - a quick-release adjustable friction knot for use on lines under tension - strange but true!

Since 2007, Open Up Music has supported the musical development of thousands of young musicians who have found themselves marginalised by ‘mainstream’ musical provision. Through our innovative, award-winning programmes we work alongside young disabled musicians to tackle inequality, create new instruments and inspire new music for the 21st century. Our programmes are delivered in partnership with schools, Music Hubs and some of the UK’s leading arts and cultural organisations. Together, we challenge the barriers experienced by young disabled musicians to create a world where musical progression and live ensemble music-making are open to everyone. As Chief Executive, I am responsible for developing and delivering a succinct organisational strategy that best achieves the organisation's targeted social outcomes.
