I'm Barry Hughes, and I've been leading Selwood Housing as CEO for 17 years. After a mathematics degree from Cambridge University my journey started in finance, where I qualified as an accountant and worked as finance director for the Metro and Evening Standard newspapers. Then on Good Friday in 2005 I decided, with my future wife, to move to the south-west and resigned the next week (sometimes the quick decisions are the best decisions!). I moved to Selwood Housing as finance director and soon after that I made the move that I had always wanted, into the chief executive role. At Selwood Housing, we stand for being honest, doing the right thing, and always looking for new ways to do our jobs better. One of the big things we've done is to build 2,000 new homes, which has made a real difference in our community. The committed team at Selwood produce great results for our customers, the highlight being rent arrears that are consistently below 1%.I believe in trying out new ideas and technology to keep us moving forward. I want everyone at Selwood Housing to feel important and excited about the work we do. We're not just building houses; we're creating homes.As well as my role at Selwood, I have also been a NED for Julian House and now Bath University Student Union.When I'm not working, you'll find me lifting weights 🏋️‍♀️. I've even competed in the World and European Masters Weightlifting competitions 🌍, bringing home silver and bronze medals 🥈🥉.
