Designed and built an intranet based reporting platform for a large family office.They had an established Excel workflow that they wanted to keep, so we were constrained to using that and VB as a backend, and HTML, CSS, and JS on the front end. We crafted a solution around these parameters by writing of the data from excel into a very long JS file and saving it to the file system. I put flyers in every surf shop in Orange County, connected with state park officials and beach clean-up groups to spread the word, bought advertising on surfline.com, and sat at the beach manually upodating the data every saturday, sunday, and holiday for 6mo.Well, word spread like wildfire and I got immediate product-market-fit, with page view numbers reaching 80k/mo, and my banner ad click through rate over 5% (10x what othere advertisers were getting). I monetized the home page by selling banner ads and was soon making thousands of dollars per month. Some advertisers didnt have a digial version of their marketing, so we started offering design services as well and became a small agency. With steady cash flow, I paid hig school kids to update the website and went surfing.Overall, the concept didnt scale, but by the time I shut the business, web cameras were becoming commonplace and the state wanted a formal bid to install and maintain them. Not the type of business I was looking for. The notoriety and network I gained from a crazy idea and a weekend of hacking, sustained my website design and development business for almost a decade, so I still consider it one of the great learning experiences and successes of my life.
