My role as a Senior Consultant within con terra covers aspects of project initiation, investigation and implementation. Tending to specialise in requirements analysis, I am particularly concerned with the organisational and technical workflows of Enterprise Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Data Infrastructures.

As a Solution Architect, I acted as the Spatial Systems Authority on all GIS-related project deliveries from ESRI Ireland. This ranged from designing physical architectures through to the design of human interaction with those systems. I was heavily involved in the bid process with the ESRI Ireland sales team and was the first point of call on estimates and high-level design for GIS projects. I was also responsible for ensuring best practice on all elements of GIS implementations.

Paradigm Technology was the distributor of ESRI software in Ireland until 2002, when ESRI Ireland was formed from the GIS Department of Paradigm. The role of Senior Consultant with Paradigm included requirements analysis, data and process modelling and the design of technical architectures. A client-facing role, this involved providing advice on the use of the ESRI software suite, on-site problem solving and managing the implementation of solutions.

The Discovery Programme is a State-funded archaeological research institution based in Dublin, Ireland. As GIS Manager, I was responsible for the management and co-ordination of the company’s GIS, IT and survey policies. This ranged from the overall concept and design of a GIS for archaeological research through to data acquisition, integration and implementation. I provided consultation on technical and GIS matters for Project Directors when designing research strategies and provided training and education to archaeological staff. I also managed and co-ordinated the Discovery Programme’s survey staff and field operations.

My position as Surveyor in the Discovery Programme involved the development and application of modern survey techniques for archaeological research, which have since been adopted by the archaeological community in Ireland as a whole. I was responsible for the generation and maintenance of base mapping and archaeological datasets using ArcInfo and for the production of maps and illustrations for the publication. The Discovery Programme pioneered the use of GIS in Irish archaeology through the use of ArcInfo and ArcView 3 with 3D and Spatial Analyst, stimulating the use of these analytical techniques in Irish archaeology.
