In 1979, I graduated from Aircraft Mechanic College. After graduation, I worked as an aircraft mechanic for small repair shops before I started my own maintenance repair shop. It eventually grew to be a Fixed Based Operator with 30 or more mechanics and line personnel. I was offered an opportunity at MESA Air group to take a six week course on airframe, power plant, and electrical systems. I was assigned to the Fokker 70 Jetliner program and quickly moved up into the FAA Certificate Manager’s Position after I developed MESA’s Fokker 70 Maintenance Program and rewrote many others. I left MESA with the intention of starting my own consulting company. I taught myself computer programming and wrote a maintenance program. The first program I created sold to several airlines. Shortly thereafter I was hired by Northwest Airlines and was promoted to Manager of Production Coordination for the Airbus fleet. My experience at Northwest taught me that major airlines are essentially the same as regional airlines. It was then I was inspired to start Sinex Aviation Technologies (now DBA Empower-MX). Within 5 years I had 13 patents for my software and employed 50 people. We installed the program in most of the major airlines in North America including: Air Canada, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines and US Airways. That particular software manages the heavy aircraft maintenance hangar floor operations. I started a new company, Sinex Solutions, in 2004 with Lesley Rathbun. Our vision was to capture the rest of the maintenance process with technology and spread it to other industries. We spent the rest of that year doing nothing but writing the core of a web-based computer program that now is managing nearly 40% of the marine industry, commercial and military aircraft around the world, railroads and oil and gas. With over 100 customers and tens of thousands of users, the program is poised to change the way maintenance is managed around the world.
