About Bart Carmichael

Bart Carmichael is a Director of IT at Columbia Machine at Columbia Machine, Inc.. He possess expertise in integration, erp, sharepoint, business intelligence, management and 45 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I worked directly for Bart at Reliance Steel and Aluminum (then EMJ) from 1999-2002, and again for a period of time between 2009-2013. Bart was tasked with the special project (among others) of developing a needle-moving warehousing automation system (WAX/TRAX) for EMJ, then a $1B company. With a small team of just a handful of employees, Bart was able to successfully guide our team to create a suite of programs that increased efficiency so much that while EMJ grew to over $2B of annual revenue (doubled), their warehouse staff was actually able to be reduced. The order tracking/fulfillment programs were so effective that they allowed EMJ to achieve 99.9% on-time order fulfillment and to begin an 'On time or free' policy that would refund both the cost of material AND transportation if an order sourced from their warehouses was not delivered on the promised date. Many people in the metals industry know that EMJ stands out for its customer service, but few know about the integral role Bart played in its success. By the way, EMJ's system was so effective that despite having been in place since 1994 (warehouse automation was added much later), EMJ refuses to go to another system and give up the distinctive advantage that their current ERP provides. To achieve this at all is amazing, but to do it with a small staff, is unheard of in the IT industry. This is an example of the kind of manager Bart is and the vision he possesses. Bart would be a gem on any executive team." and "Bart is one of those rare managers who also naturally puts his staff at ease while both mentoring and motivating them. When I joined Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co last year, I was faced with mastering a completing new system unlike any I had previously worked with. I had the good fortune to work with Bart who guided my training and staged my responsibilities allowing me to rapidly master the unfamiliar system. Bart’s positive attitude and respect others built a cohesive and happy team that achieved remarkable results. Bart has my highest recommendation."

Reporting to the CEO and working with the rest of the executive management team to develop and implement a long term technology strategy consisting of mobile computing, infrastructure refresh, vendor partnerships, and IT staff development to support an aggressive multi-year growth plan.➢ With the company growing at a 30% rate in 2014, dispatch was getting overwhelmed with calls from the drivers. By installing a tablet in each truck in the fleet and developing applications for drivers to process trips and stay in communication with dispatch, the need to hire additional dispatchers was avoided by driving down the phone calls by 80%.➢ With the tablets now in the trucks, we purchased the JJ Keller electronic log system to track drive time. Once fully implemented total violations will be reduced.➢ 25% of paperwork was eliminated from the Safety department by capturing driver inspection forms on an in-house application developed for the tablets.➢ The in-house application, critical to the business, is written in FoxPro and dependent on an old, unsupported version of Novell running on 10-15 year old servers. This version of Novell will not run on any operating system newer than XP. Moving to a single network by eliminating Novell and standardizing on Active Directory will allow the company to uniformly upgrade the infrastructure, upgrade the desktop, get the company back to supported systems, and replace old, failing servers. A project was started to modify the FoxPro code to work on Active Directory, which will enable us to get off Novell and start the upgrade process.➢ In parallel with the FoxPro rewrite, Accent, a company specializing in infrastructure support, has been engaged to execute a long-term server plan to replace most of the servers, and install a disk array.
