As a Justice Department reporter with USA TODAY, I have focused for years on breaking news and producing thoughtful enterprise about the investigations of former President Donald Trump. I covered the obstruction side of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe while a colleague pursued Russia angles. I anchored coverage of both impeachments, with breaking news and enterprise from House hearings through Senate trials. And I cover the House Jan. 6 panel's investigation. On the side, I was the lead reporter in 2020 covering Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. I also wrote award-winning stories that year about Congress not approving legislation for major priorities such as the policing overhaul after George Floyd's murder or Biden's $3.5 trillion spending proposal. Previously, my award-winning aviation stories covered safety and consumer issues at the Federal Aviation Administration, flight risks at the Transportation Security Administration and accident investigations at the National Transportation Safety Board. I occasionally describe my stories for national television and radio programs such as C-Span, CBS News and National Public Radio's On Point. Links are posted below. I have also moderated industry panels about issues such as air-traffic control and airline competition at industry conferences. For example, I interviewed American Airlines CEO Doug Parker at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Aviation Summit.I am a versatile reporter who can quickly and accurately simplify complex issues for readers. Before joining USA TODAY, I covered the federal government for a series of papers in Florida, Maine and California. My stories for the Portland Press Herald about health care, energy and military-base closures in a closely divided Congress won several national and regional awards. I learned about homeland security as a fellow at Johns Hopkins University's School of International Studies' International Reporting Project. Between newspaper stints, I covered Senate leadership for Congressional Quarterly, where stories ranged from short scoops to 5,000-word magazine cover stories. Before reaching Washington, I covered state legislatures in Maryland and Idaho. My familiarity with state and local governments informs my federal stories.
