Bart studied law at VU university in Amsterdam. He started his career as in-house lawyer of the Dutch Commodity Board for Ornamentals (PVS). After his tenure with PVS, in 1984 Bart became justice later coordinating vice-president of the Dutch Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal ( College van Beroep voor het bedrijfsleven ( CBB).From 1989 Bart combined his function at the CBB with the chairmanship of the Dutch Council for Plan breeders' rights. In 1996 he was appointed as president of the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO). This EU agency is responsible for the management of the Community plant variety rights system. After his departure as president of the CPVO in 2011 Bart created his own consultancy firm Bart Kiewiet Consultancy . Its main activity is legal counseling especially in the field of plant variety rights. Bart Kiewiet Consultancy is located at Genistalaan 32, 7313 BJ Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.In the same year Bart joined Vondst Advocaten in Amsterdam, a law firm specialized in ip law, in an of counsel capacity. Vondst Advocaten is one of the few law firms in the Netherlands with an extensive experience in the field of plant variety rights. In June 2014 , leading UK based Intellectual Property law firm , D Young & Co has engaged Bart to provide legal consultancy and other advice in relation to plant breeders' rights (also known as plant variety rights). Bart will work closely with D Young & Co's Biotech Team in advising clients on IP protection and registration of plant varieties.
