I used the AASHE STARS process to develop a detailed portrait of sustainability at the University of Iowa. Working directly with the office of sustainability and stakeholders across campus I collected information and providing feedback to all areas of campus operations. At the end of the process we will identified areas in need of improvement as well as strengths at the University of Iowa.

At the beginning of the 2011-2012 academic year the University of Iowa transitioned to a single-stream recycling program. I worked within facilities management to ensure a smooth transition. Through a collaborative effort between university leadership, my supervisor, myself, building coordinators, custodial staff, stakeholders across campus and our hauler Waste Management we were able to improve recycling on campus by 13% by weight in the first year. We updated recycling infrastructure, developed educational materials, presented to students, faculty, and staff, identified problem areas, and addressed safety concerns brought on by the new system.

Work with businesses, organizations, institutions, and residents to develop creative solutions in order to divert material from the landfill. This saves the material generators and material markets money through avoided tip fees and material acquisition costs. This process also develops symbiotic relationships within the business community.

My first task with the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency (CRLCSWA) was to collect user data for the Pollution Prevention Center. I conducted a survey of all Categorically Exempt Small Quantity Generators. During this process I took on the additional task of developing a system that updated every time a customer used the program. This would allow for future survey efforts to be streamlined by easily accessing when a business last used the service. I was also charged to develop a recycling pilot program at a multi-family dwelling complex. By working with all stakeholders, collecting data, and utilizing regular educational notices the multi-family complex was able to have on-site single-stream recycling for less than one dollar per unit per month.

During my internship at HR Green I balanced transportation and environmental impact assessment projects. I wrote categorical exclusions, section 4(f) documents, and environmental assessments as required for the NEPA process. I also gained further experience drafting comprehensive transportation plans.
