My main theme is manufacturing engineering with a systems engineering approach, often based on a business case: enhancing design processes, developing assembly lines, introduction of new process technology and products, with qualification of production processes. My turf are capital goods as aircraft, trains, ships and their infrastructure, structures for satellites and launchers and even airships. These products are build in small numbers, have a large complexity, are capital intensive and operate generally in a large scale public of private service.Their design and build is based on life cycle analysis, quality assurance and innovations on subsystems, and occasionally on the whole system. Design and build are driven by systems engineering processes as system architecting, requirements management, configuration management, supply chain management, safety cases, and qualification or certification. The processes are developed by the design-build teams themselves, drawing on lessons learned from other projects an and often recorded in proces manuals as design-build manuals, requirements management plans, and other plans. These processes enhance a structured way of working for all team members. All these aspects I have met in many design-build projects for industrial companies and mid-life updates in maintenance companies.
