About Bart Shepherd

ABOUT MEI am a passionate and collaborative non-profit leader and conservationist with thirty years experience in the public aquarium and natural history museum sector. I prioritize diverse perspectives, continuous learning, and personal growth. I lead with empathy and curiosity, and am committed to nurturing a culture of respect, trust, and accountability. I believe in a workplace where we motivate, develop and enrich staff with the understanding that people are our most important asset.CAREER HIGHLIGHTSFrom 2002–2008, I collaborated with designers, architects and contractors to open the Renzo Piano designed California Academy of Sciences; at a total cost of $480MM, this is the largest cultural project in San Francisco history. From 2015–2024, I co-directed Hope for Reefs, combining powerful science-based solutions with deep community involvement and global environmental education to reverse the decline of Earth’s coral reefs in this generation. In 2023, I led the California Academy of Sciences’ celebration of the Steinhart Aquarium centennial anniversary. I serve our professional community through roles on nonprofit boards (Species360, SECORE International), and within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (Program Leader for SAFE Coral; Vice Chair of the Aquatic Collections Sustainability Committee). I have led Steinhart Aquarium through two successful AZA accreditations (2014, 2019) and helped develop a new mission statement and institutional strategy for the California Academy of Sciences (2020–2024).VISION AND MISSIONI believe that we can create meaningful positive change for human communities and our planet by inspiring people to strengthen their connection with, and empathy for, the natural world.
