Bart Aptroot is director of the Amsterdam office of Amsterdam and New York based One Architecture.After his study at Eindhoven University of Technology, Bart Aptroot worked at Venhoeven CS on the design and realization of the Jan Schaefer bridge in Amsterdam. In 2001 Bart Aptroot and Joachim Karelse founded Karelse Aptroot Architects. Their office made name worldwide with the wooden Twin House. The cooperation was ended June 2005 to explore new business approaches. In 2006 Bart Aptroot joined One Architecture, helping to broaden the field of work of this office.Today ONE is a global leader in large-scale climate adaptation and waterfront infrastructure planning. ONE has been instrumental in the development of complex, multi-actor planning processes in the US, Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. In their studios, designers work with engineers, policymakers, and communities to shape joint narratives, develop strategies, and implement projects.One Architecture is known and well appreciated for its unique approach in which programmatic, technical and organizational issues are addressed. This has particularly proven to be successful with the current shift towards more user participation in design and community driven (re-)development. One Architecture and its team are experts in participative design processes, from the scale of co-created apartment buildings in Amsterdam, to the urban restructuring of existing neighborhoods in Deventer and Gouda and the community driven elements of the Coastal Resiliency project for Lower Manhattan.Bart Aptroot is an expert in the field of climate adaptation in the built environment. He has experience with residential development, health care environments, transformation of historical buildings, brownfield redevelopment, urban infrastructure and circular economy principles. Bart Aptroot has been a member of the committee of architectural quality and monuments of Amsterdam.
