KiCo his scope is to help children victim of caustic soda and to warn for the dangers of this product.Up to now our activities were taking place in Guinea. It’s easy to get caustic soda in Guinea because the product is used for the processing of bauxite (material that is exploited in the mines of Guinea) to aluminum. The caustic soda however is by inhabitants applied in dying factories (batiks) and to make artisanal soap. The sale of that artisanal soap is mostly the only source of income for the housewives. Sometimes it is used to bleach hair of women or to remove hair of the skin of death animals.Mostly the caustic soda is not stored properly and unfortunately by accident children swallow this product what leads to terribly mouth and gullet burnings. KiCo helps these children by supplying medical material. The pediatric surgeon of NGO 2AMG ( Aide et Action Médicales en Guinée) places a external gastric probe and a “endless rope” so that the children can be fed. A later dilatation of the esophagus makes it possible that in most of the cases they can drink and eat normally. End 2010 it became obvious that these injuries from caustic soda in children are also very common in other West African countries. Since the beginning of 2011 KICO has also started support for those victims in Gambia. In the beginning 2012 in Mali and more recently (end 2013) in Burkina Faso.
