I enjoy being a coach, and have always been athletic, played Division 1 baseball at the University of Arkansas, formed and coached and played semi-pro baseball teams until i was 32.. When I entered the service I knew that most firefighters stay too long and end up injured, I was determined to not duplicate that life, there were also family problems developing..I served my twenty years and retired at age 48, with my health intact. I had just taken a position to work in a pro shop at a semi-private course here, when several of the firefighters, pulled me out of the woodwork, so to speak, to run for city council, they were endorsing several canidates because of a group of councilers wanted to lay off several Firefighters and Police Officers, blameing our street problems on a too costly Fire Department, and Police Department. One member of this group, had not drawn an opponent on the last day to file, I found myself in a ole, "smoke filled room" but I am politically astute enough to know what was happening to me. I have left out of my profile that I was raised in a political family and my father held office in the State Legislature for several years, even made a bid for Congress, and worked in Washington for several years. Also, I spent 15 years working on the technial staff of the Tulsa County Election Board, sometimes full time, but usually part time. Since this guy would waltz back into office, I said ok on the condition, I would not use any of my families money for this race, I will repeat again I am very politically astute. The young lads and ladies had all the forms ready and a $50.00 cashiers check and they filed my candidacy.. WE gave them hell, and to my suprise many of my ballplayers had become firefighters, but we lost by 140 votes. So I went back to the pro shop knowing that being a coach was one of my talents and that is what I would make my objective. Being politically astute could be used to become a world class coach.
