I laid out the case for creating a high-end Linux laptop whose goal was to raise Dell’s profile among developers. Key to the project’s success would be publicly soliciting and incorporating input from the developer community. Besides extreme transparency I stressed that, in order to succeed it was essential that we donate code back to Linux kernel. This approach was new to Dell but after some deliberation the team and I were given $40K and six months to see if there was enough interest to justify productizing it. The response was incredible and less than 8 months after the initial presentation, the XPS 13 developer laptop became publicly available. Project Sputnik, now in its 12th year, has grown into an entire portfolio of developer systems and has turned an investment of $40K into tens of millions of dollars in recurring revenue.
