After writing for years about threats to democracy and the rule of law, I decided to step aside from journalism and get off the sidelines as a member of the executive team at the Brennan Center. For most of my career I have been a nonfiction author and journalist whose work has ranged across government, politics, law and national security. In the spring of 2020 I joined The Atlantic as staff writer and Penguin Press published DARK MIRROR, my book on Edward Snowden and NSA surveillance. The Century Foundation, where I was a senior fellow, was my professional home throughout the book research and writing. My previous work includes three years at Time magazine and 21 years at The Washington Post, with assignments that spanned the metropolitan, national, foreign and investigative desks. I have taught six courses at Princeton, on nonfiction writing, on investigative reporting, and on national security secrecy, and spent two years as visiting research collaborator at the Center for Information Technology Policy.
