About Barton Kuebler

I am the General Manager of Onyx AudioVisual, a boutique audio/visual integration and high-end live event production firm. I began this position in November of 2023. I fulfill the duties of what would be COO and CFO at a larger company. From May of 2022 through October of 2023, I fulfilled several senior leadership roles at Virginia Stage Company. Key highlights of my time with VSC were working as Director of Production, leading the staffing and execution of several fully-staged works, and also as Capital Improvements Project Manager, leading a $1.5-million renovation of the historic Wells Theater.I stepped down as Artistic Director of the Zeiders American Dream Theater—The Z—in May of 2022, after leading the company through its first eight years of growth. I began with the company in May of 2014, and subsequently led the design, construction, and outfitting of three theater spaces; programmed several annual seasons of performances; fostered the creation of 15 new plays and four new musicals, including every step of the process from commissioning through premiere; and created a combined music/theater/film festival. As Artistic Director I also created new programming for the company. I developed a one-act musical, "Moonshiner," through a play development series I created, "The Hatchery." "Moonshiner" was subsequently selected for the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival 2019. I've collaborated on the creation of more than 20 new cabaret programs during this time, coordinating all aspects of production. I led the conversion and outfitting of a former retail storefront into a temporary theater space in 2015. I followed that project as a key team member in the design, construction, and outfitting of a new $10.5 million theater from 2015 through 2018. The new building houses two theaters under one roof, a 299-seat thrust stage and a 2,300-square-foot flexible studio theater capable of seating up to 120. Each theater runs independently; I managed both.We grew our team from two full-time staff to ten full-time and more than 25 flex-time employees during this period. I supervised all productions and operations at the theater and hired additional staff as needed. I managed budgets for all aspects of production, from initial contract negotiations through box office reconciliation. I worked closely with the development team on identifying grant and fund-raising opportunities, and led those initiatives when appropriate.Prior to my time with The Z, I worked as a performer, playwright, high school teacher, local union president, and Army musician.
