University Researcher Media Law (European Commission Research programme 'Mediadem'). This EU research project aimed at examining the factors that promote or hinder policy development for media freedom and independence in 14 European countries. The project was funded by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme.

As an in-house senior legal counsel at j2 Global (see j2Global.com; Nasdaq: JCOM), I helped to set up my company's European legal department and provided advice on a wide range of legal issues. I advised upper management on strategic decisions such as mergers and acquisitions, partnerships, regulatory developments in various EU countries (especially in the field of telecommunications), management of trademark and copyright portfolios (incl. filing of trademark applications and ensuring compliance of IP by third parties), and issues of HR and corporate governance. I worked actively on the standardization of contracts and company practices, and set-up a compliance team for matters relating to telecom, privacy, data retention and subpoenas. I collaborated with colleagues of the product development and sales teams and of the US legal team on day-to-day legal issues, such as the negotiation of telecom agreements, licensing contracts, marketing agreements, partnership contracts and the drafting of general terms and conditions. This broad experience helped me to sharpen my practical legal skills, and in particular my ability to formulate legal solutions in different national jurisdictions.

This includes drafting licensing agreements, setting-up IP strategies and representing clients before courts and arbitrators, the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property, OHIM (the EU trademarks and designs registry) and WIPO (the United Nations agency for intellectual property).
