I joined Strathclyde University to further my experience in IT Infrastructure, with a specific focus on Storage and Windows Server. Due to a lack of resources I became a key member of the project team to replace our SAN. I was involved in the implementation of new back-end storage, the build and configuration of a new fabric infrastructure and the configuration - and now the ongoing administration - of the NAS front-ends. Primarily, however, I have been responsible for the deployment of an entirely new backup system - consisting of new servers, short-term and long-term storage, and new software.Key Responsibilities:• Deploying, managing and administering a Commvault Simpana instance to perform regularautomated backups of all our servers at database, application, file, or virtual machine level.• Managing and maintaining our virtual server environment of Hyper-V 2008 and 2012 machines.• Monitoring and administering our HP BladeSystem Infrastructure, including the migration of blades from an old machine hall to a new one with limited impact to the business.

I moved to the Service Operations team to be more involved in the infrastructure side of IT. Due to my background, my primary responsibility became our IBM iSeries environment as our sole iSeries administrator. Currently working on a project to upgrade the OS from V5R4 to V7R1.Key Responsibilities:• Ensuring the availability of 3 physical iSeries systems, running a total of 9 LPARs on two different levels of the operating system.• Keeping all LPARs up to date with appropriate PTFs and application patches.• Providing a reliable backup solution that does not impact system performance.• Performing regular Disaster Recovery simulations to ensure an accurately documented process, as well as demonstrate full system functionality.As part of the team I have many further responsibilities across our estate:• Supporting our Wintel environment, including deploying, monitoring and patching of physical machines as well as VMWare virtual machines.• Monitoring all of our IT equipment including Servers, Switches, Routers, Storage, UPS etc.• Monitoring network and server performance and providing solutions to improve these.• Responding to any issues with any of our equipment and resolving - using third parties where necessary.• Providing third line support for various systems as well as out of hours support when required.• Ensuring license compliance.• Keeping support contracts up to date to ensure appropriate support levels for various systems, but also to keep costs under control.

I joined Robert Wiseman Dairies straight out of University as an iSeries developer. Originally this was with the idea of developing in Java to move some of our systems from green-screen to web-based solutions.Within a month of joining an opportunity arose to become part of a small team working on a project involving RFID. My university course included a lot of electronics and electrical engineering, so this appealed - details of that project can be found below.After 18 months involved in the RFID project I was involved in developing and testing a short-term fix that was implemented to ensure accurate farmer's payments. Our farmers' contracts were changing due to demands from one of our major customers and our current system was unable to carry out the required calculations. This also lead to another major project to upgrade the milk procurement system.I eventually got involved in programming, but in RPGLE rather than Java and for the following two years I was part of the iSeries team developing new programs and supporting old ones. This also included supporting the milk procurement system mentioned above, as well as our HR system and our Payroll system. The support for the latter two systems also included testing and installing upgrades and updates for performance reasons, additional features and regulatory reasons.Key responsibilities included:• Creating new programs for our Sales and ERP systems based on requests from the business• Providing third line support for our Sales, ERP, Milk Procurement and many other systems• Carrying out upgrades to our Payroll, HR and Milk Procurement systems• Suggesting improvements to business practices and implementing these where possible• Following the ITIL framework to deliver the above in the most efficient and effective way possible
