Last September I started the international minor; Creating Resilient Cities at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam). I will learn more about the concept of resilience and work in multidisciplinary groups to apply this knowledge in a research project.‘Resilience is described as the ability of a system to absorb changes and disturbances and still maintain the same relationship between its components, or re-organize itself into a fully functioning system again’ (Tapsuwan, Mathot, Walker, & Barnett, 2018).The minor Creating Resilient Cities is a contribution to the 100 resilient cities program, which is pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC). The 100RC program is a network of 100 cities around the world that supports resiliency within their cities. To make the system of a city (more) able to absorb and bounce back from shocks and stresses. Shocks as in earthquakes, fires, floods, etc. or stresses as in high unemployment, inefficient transportation systems or a lack of affordable housing, etc.Cities that are part of the 100RC program, created a resilient strategy about how to implement resiliency within their city borders. The project my team is working on will contribute to the strategies of both cities of Rotterdam and Bristol and focuses particularly on affordable housing and liveability. Both cities are challenged by natural population growth and ongoing urban migration, this causes a shortage of affordable houses and a possible lack of liveability. Therefore, we will compare both cities and investigate how principles, that contributes to the affordability and liveability, can be implemented into public procurement goals. So, developers will become stimulated to contribute to the liveability and affordability in dense urban areas.

Komend half jaar vul ik een werkervaringsplek (trainee) functie in bij de afdeling Milieu. Hier ga ik aan de slag met het uitdenken van beleid omtrent één van de vijf Rotterdamse perspectieven; de gezonde stad. Rotterdam zet zich in voor schonere lucht en een betere balans tussen rust (stilte) en reuring (stedelijkheid en drukte). Hoe zorg je ervoor dat mensen die wonen en werken in de buurt van snelwegen, industrie en havengebieden, toch een voldoende schone leefomgeving hebben?Tijdens mijn werkzaamheden zal ik gebiedsgericht kijken naar wat wenselijk en haalbaar is. Zo is het denkbaar dat er binnen een centrum stedelijk gebied andere lucht- en geluidsnormen haalbaar en/of wenselijk zijn dan in een landelijk buitengebied. De vertaling naar een werkbaar beleidskader en de nieuwe omgevingswet zullen hierbij centraal staan.
