About Bas Huisman
My expertise is in the field of coastal morphology and wave transformation processes. This involves (1) understanding of the relevant physical processes, (2) skills to apply state-of-art models to answer relevant questions, (3) the ability to communicate results of research and consultancy projects in a clear and concise way and (4) pro-active attitude to initiate new research, acquire challenging projects and motivate other researchers. This communication takes place through reports, scientific papers and presentations. Most projects at Deltares focus on coastal morphology. This involves the assessment of the coastal impacts of structures (e.g. harbour moles or offshore wind farms), dredging in navigation channels, morphology of estuaries, bed composition changes in the marine environment and the stability of natural and artificial beaches. Furthermore, I have participated also in a variety of projects which aimed at the assessment of (design) wave conditions for coastal structures, wave penetration into harbours or the effect of ship waves. In the recent years, projects were also carried out which focused on the development of rapid assessment tools for policy makers to streamline and improve the process of policy making for the Dutch coast. Also software development part of the work. Sate-of-art models and data processing techniques are used to come up with relevant answers for these projects. One can think of mophodynamic modelling with Delft3D, Xbeach, ShorelineS and UNIBEST-CL+ (for which I am the principle developer), wave modelling (SWAN and PHAROS) and the application of a CFD model (ComFLOW), but also field measurements and physical scale models are made. Countries of work experience are The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, United States, Colombia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Iraq, Oman, S-A, Namibia, Senegal, South-Africa, Vietnam, India.
Listed skills include Coastal Engineering, Coastal, Numerical Analysis, Modeling, and 23 others.

Bas Huisman work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Senior Advisor/Researcher
CurrentAs a senior coastal engineer I provide expert advise for consultancy projects, work on novel technical developments (e.g. coastal software development), initiate and perform specialist research on coastal processes, get most out of research teams, provide training, motivate younger researchers, communicate towards the client, precisely perform project management and acquire challenging projects.
Researcher / Consultant Coastal Engineering
Coastal engineering research and consultancy has been carried out in a wide variety of projects around the World. This involved expert advise /research using numerical modelling, field measurements, laboratory experiments with the aim of obtaining insight in the coastal processes that are relevant for the lifetime, stability, maintenance and environmental impacts of coastal structures (e.g. sand nourishments, port breakwaters, navigation channels, tidal basins, offshore monopiles, natural and artificial beaches). Software development and technological improvements are typically a requirement in the studies.
Phd Researcher
The function of PhD researcher at the TU-Delft aims at investigating the processes that drive long-term coastal morphological changes at sandy beaches and bed composition changes. This involves the investigation of the net impacts of selected coastal processes and the analysis of field data (especially on coastal bathymetry and hydrodynamics). Specific attention is paid to the Delfland coastline (between Hoek van Holland and Scheveningen) which is monitored thoroughly with state-of-art measuring techniques like ARGUS video systems, x-band radar, single/multibeam echo soundings, ADCP's and by regular sediment sampling. The research should verify the hypotheses that are obtained from numerical modelling and careful observations with validation data from these field measurements.
Researcher On Water Quality
Research on water quality in the primary waterways in the Netherlands. This involved the data analysis and modelling of various substances that influence the quality of the water and river bed of the Dutch primary water ways. The work took place in the context of the European guidelines on water quality (the water framework directive).
