The Netherlands and South Korea share many similar challenges in the fields of water, subsoil and infrastructure. Typical examples are dealing with effects of climate change, coastal erosion, maintaining good water quality, dike stability, salt intrusion, sustainable energy, algae blooms, cooling water use, governance, flood plain management, wetland restoration etc. That is a lot!!! For Deltares, I enjoy setting up and maintaining relations with Korean researchers and engineers. Key focus is to jointly address challenges in R&D and commercial projects and grow our knowledge levels. Relations have been established with key research institutes and universities as well as with large engineering companies and water companies. It is great to create knowledge networks between Deltares' experts and Korean counterparts and to get fruitful cooperation off the ground. Next to coordination, I help our specialists with doing business in East Asia and understanding (business) culture.

Responsible for leading a group of 25 - 30 researchers and advisors in the following expert teams: hydraulics of pipeline systems, detailed 3D hydrodynamics, Hydraulic Structures in Systems, and Measurements & Monitoring. Member of the Hydraulic Engineer Management team heading a business unit of about 120 people. Research fields included ship locks, weirs, cooling water intakes, bulk water transmission system design and performance assessments through steady state and transient analyses, CO2 injection, tidal energy concepts, detecting plastics, fire-fighting systems, storm surge barriers, etc. Responsible for HR, marketing, project acquisition, project execution, financial aspects, software and experimental facilities.

I have been managing the Industrial Hydrodynamics department of Deltares for just over two years. In March 2017 Industrial Hydrodynamics and our Hydraulic Structure team merged and formed a new department: Hydraulics for Infrastructure & Industry. This means that next to Intake & Outfall Systems, Pumping Stations, Hydraulics of Pipeline Systems, Tidal Energy and Heat Networks, I will broaden my personal scope and work on great Locks and Sluices projects with the team. Not entirely new, considering my earlier work in the Harbours, Coastal and Offshore department and involvement in PIANC.

PIANC is the world association for waterborne transport infrastructure. The organisation PIANC was founded in 1885. It concentrates on design, construction, maintenance and operation of waterways and ports, coastal engineering, dredging, environment, sea and inland shipping as well as recreational sailing and marinas. PIANC is a non-profit politically independent organisation and forms a platform for knowledge exchange on the above topics. Experts from all over the World work in dedicated PIANC working groups on reliable , cost-effective and sustainable solutions and guidelines for waterborne transport infrastructure.The PIANC board consists of the main players in the field in the Netherlands with representatives from the main ports, engineering companies, dredgers, universities, government and research institutes.As Secretary of the Board, my role is to connect to all board members, keeping everybody up to date, and to keep the organisation running.
