I direct the strategy, planning, and execution of Computational Biology, including bioinformatics, machine learning, statistics, software engineering, and IT, at Nucleome Therapeutics. At this fast-emerging biopharma, we aim to discover novel disease treatments by unveiling the unknown secrets of the less-studied dark matter of the human genome, i.e. the non-coding DNA. I ensure that Computational Biology is, and will always be, in a healthy shape to serve and advance the short-, medium-, and long-term objectives of the company. An essential part of that is the alignment between disciplines within Computational Biology and with other teams such as genomics and drug discovery. I enjoy science as much as I enjoy strategy, people development, problem solving, numbers, coffee, and chocolates.

I joined Nucleome to build and lead the computational team of bioinformaticians and machine learning researchers to contribute to the mission of discovering novel disease treatments by unveiling the unknown secrets of the less-studied dark matter of the human genome, i.e. the non-coding DNA.

Kingdom Health is a major project, and the first-if-its-kind in Jordan, with the aim to establish a hospital associated with a medical university and 4 research centres: genomics & precision medicine, bioinformatics, health systems & public health, and stem cells & regenerative medicine. It is supported by $400m from the Saudi Jordanian Investment Funds (SJIF), and planned to open in 2026/2027 (Amman, Jordan). Bioinformatics will be one of the specialisations that medical students will be able to pursue in their third intercalation year.I provide advisory services to the team during the current planning phase regarding the establishment of bioinformatics, related elements of genomics and precision medicine, linked electronic medical records (EMRs), infrastructure, data monetisation opportunities, as well as human skill capacity requirements and the educational curriculum.

Bionl.ai builds a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product that enables scientists in biology and clinical research to analyse data, retrieve information, and accelerate research by using no-code free text prompts. The product exploits large language models (LLMs). I help the team, at an advisory capacity, to define problems and identify solutions in the field of bioinformatics and data science analysis.

I help planning and delivering the educational programmes that Phi Science runs or provides in the area of bioinformatics, especially within the Middle East region and the Arabic speaking countries. This includes seminars, workshops, and courses.

In this educational role at the rising Jordanian Genetics and Bioinformatics Association (GBA), I conduct educational programmes in bioinformatics for the members and followers of the association.

• I contribute to projects analysing anonymised electronic health record data from the UK NHSwith tasks including discussing client requirements, project planning, progress monitoringand supervision, reporting, and for the biggest part, hands-on implementation ranging from data cleaning to advanced developments and analysis.• I have a special interest and I tend to be a key leading player in projects involving genomic and multiomic data.

• Discovered the previously unknown C4 chloroplastic pyruvate exporter, which completed an entire C4 photosynthesis cycle for the first time in history.• Performed miscellaneous bioinformatic tasks for the international research groups within the C4 Rice Project (https://c4rice.com). These included analysis of various genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomics, and phylogenomic datasets.• Designed, implemented, published, and released the Clust algorithm, which has the power to extract optimal co-expressed gene clusters from gene expression data automatically.https://github.com/BaselAbujamous/clust; http://clust.baselabujamous.com• The C4 Rice project aims to improve photosynthetic efficiency in rice and thus to enhance crop yields. As such, the C4 Rice Project is one of the scientific ‘Grand Challenges’ of the 21st Century, involving the coordinated efforts of researchers from 17 research groups at 11 institutions in 8 countries. The project is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
